Waking Devices

This page explains how to power on devices remotely using Wake-on-LAN (WoL). You can wake a single device, all devices in a classroom, or every device at an entire site.

Role Required: Operator

You need the Operator or Admin role to perform wake operations.

Prerequisites

  • You must be logged in with an Operator or Admin account
  • The target devices must have WoL enabled in their BIOS/UEFI settings
  • The target devices must be registered in the inventory with a valid MAC address

Wake a Single Device

  1. In the sidebar under Sites & Classrooms, click the site name to expand it, then click the classroom containing the device
  2. Find the device you want to wake in the device list
  3. Click the device to open its detail panel
  4. Click the Wake button

The system sends a magic packet to the device and begins verification. A progress indicator shows the current status of the wake attempt.

Wake a Classroom

  1. In the sidebar under Sites & Classrooms, click the site name to expand it, then click the target classroom
  2. Click the Wake All button at the top of the classroom view
  3. A progress banner appears showing real-time status for each device in the classroom

The progress banner updates as each device moves through the wake process. You can continue using the application while the wake operation runs.

Wake an Entire Site

  1. In the sidebar, locate the site-wide wake button next to the site name
  2. Click the wake button
  3. A confirmation dialog appears -- confirm to proceed
  4. The system fans out wake operations to every classroom at the site

Site-wide wakes process each classroom in sequence. A progress banner shows the overall status across all classrooms.

Understanding the Progress Banner

During any wake operation, a live progress banner appears with real-time updates. Each device moves through these stages:

Stage Meaning
Pending Device is queued and waiting to be processed
Waking Magic packet has been sent to the device
Verifying System is checking whether the device came online using ARP verification
Success Device is confirmed online -- the magic packet was sent and the device responded
Failed Device did not respond after all retry attempts

The banner also shows elapsed time so you know how long the operation has been running.

Wake Progress Banner

Capture the progress banner during an active classroom wake showing per-device status indicators (pending, waking, verifying, success, failed).

What counts as success?

A wake is marked "success" only when two things happen: the magic packet is sent and the device is confirmed online via ARP verification. Simply sending the packet is not enough.

Retrying Failed Devices

If some devices fail to wake, you can retry them without re-waking devices that already succeeded.

  1. Open the wake job detail panel by clicking on the progress banner or the wake job entry
  2. Review the list of failed devices
  3. Click Retry to resend magic packets to only the failed devices

Wake Job Detail Panel

Capture the slide-out panel showing a completed wake job with success/failure breakdown and retry button.

Tip

If a device consistently fails to wake, check that WoL is enabled in its BIOS and that its MAC address is correct in the inventory. See Troubleshooting Wake Failures for a full checklist.
